Visas for Chefs australia
If you are a chef or work in the hospitality industry and want to obtain Permanent Residence as a Chef in Australia, there are several paths you can explore. Here you will learn about the most common and recommended paths and learn step-by-step how to obtain your chef visa in Australia.
WHAT IS THE MIGRATION AND JOB OUTLOOK OF A CHEF?
JOB OUTLOOK
· Highly employable
· A profession that kept high numbers of employment even during the pandemic
· Employable virtually in any country
· However, please bear in mind chefs tend to work long hours, on their feet, and in a high-pressure environment. Only consider studying to become a chef if you have a strong passion for the profession.
MIGRATION OUTLOOK
· Very highly sought after in all states and territories.
· Chefs, cooks, pastrycooks, bakers, restaurant managers, and hotel managers are invited to virtually all Australian states.
HOW DOES A CHEF BECOME A PERMANENT RESIDENT?
OPTION 1: COME TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA
The usual pathway takes approximately 3 years from beginning to end (2 years of studies and 1 year of experience)
Most people study the following courses:
1. Certificate III in either Commercial Cookery or Patisserie (1 year)
2. Certificate IV in either Commercial Cookery or Patisserie (6 months)
3. Diploma in hospitality management (6 months)
After their studies, they apply for a 485 graduate visa and complete one year of full-time experience (this is called the Job Ready Program).
OPTION 2:
Study in their home country but accumulate 3 years of post-qualification experience as a chef.
OPTION 3:
Only work experience and no qualifications. Here you must have 6 years of experience as a chef.
WHAT TO DO AFTER STUDYING TO BECOME A CHEF?
Either ask for an invitation for permanent residence from a state or look for a sponsor (after the 485 graduate visa).
You have 2 paths, the ideal path is to find a sponsor, that is, a company that is willing to hire you and support your application for permanent residence in Australia.
If the first option is not possible, you can compete in the Australian points system:
When you compete in the Points System, you must gather as many points as you can. However, in recent years, getting an invitation from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, and Victoria has become increasingly difficult. Thus, many chefs go to South Australia, Tasmania & the Northern Territory to look for an invitation.
Still, there are a lot of chefs who decide to stay in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth to look for a sponsor. Remember that to obtain a sponsored visa, you must have at least 2 years of experience as a chef.
WORK SPONSORSHIP (VISA 482 OR 186)
If you have at least 2 years of experience, an Australian company can sponsor you.
However, remember that for chefs only full menu restaurants can sponsor you.
If you have 3 years of post-diploma of hospitality management experience then an Australian company can nominate you for permanent residence on a 186 visa.
POINTS SYSTEM
You must maximize your points as much as you can.
For a 189 visa, you are likely to need over 95 points (2022).
However, if you ask a state like South Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory to invite you then you can probably be invited with as little as 65 points.
